Mark, you mentioned that the ZD back can't handle long exposures. The obvious answer that came to my mind was image stacking.

One shot taken at ISO100 for 10 seconds may be noisy; but take multiple shots, average them in an image stacking program, and you can get clean images at any light level with some patience.
